25 years informatics at ETH Zurich

The world between 0 and 1
From October 20th to 29th 2006 the department computer science of the ETH Zurich celebrates the 25-year old existence of the computer science training course at the ETH. The anniversary-program includes a symposium for specialists and a large interactive-exhibition for the public and students of all grades. In addition lectures, guided tours and pannels with researchers are planned.

Zurich@Berlin, 1st of August 2006

On the 1th of August Zurich will appear as an guest canton at the federal celebration of the swiss embassy in Berlin. The eminently respectable celebration, which accomplishes the swiss agency in each case for six years always with a guest canton, consists a road celebration for the polulation and one Gala Dinner for over 1000 invited guests. The road celebration will take place on the famous boulevard under the lime trees in the proximity of the "Brandenburger Tor".

100 Years Simplon Tunnel – Join Our Celebration!

On 20 May, we will be celebrating the Simplon tunnel's one hundredth birthday in Brig and in Domodossola, with an interactive event exhibition, numerous historical and contemporary engines and rolling stock – including the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express – and a Gianna Nannini concert. Changes on the ETH Executive Board - Handing over the keys

One era comes to an end and another begins. Olaf Kübler's term of office as President of ETH Zurich officially ended on 30th November. The handing over of the office to Ernst Hafen was celebrated with the public transfer of the key in the hall of ETH's main building. At the same ceremony Ulrich Suter, Vice-president Research, handed over to his successor, Dimos Poulikakos. The newly constituted ETH Executive Board can now take up its work.

ETH Visions – Encounters with the future

To close the year-long anniversary celebration ETH Zurich invited to a full week of symposia, discussion panels and workshops. Personalities from politics, economics, science and society have been invited to a dialogue with ETH staff. The goal is to connect people and to think together about the future of ETH Zurich and the role of education in Switzerland. You can find more information here.

The silver “Xaver“ award for ETH Zurich in the class public events

It is the Oscar of the Swiss event and exhibition sector. In the newly refurbished Hallenstadion in Zurich Oerlikon, the Xaver awards were presented to Switzerland’s best event concepts of 2005 by Expo+Event Swiss Association.”Welten des Wissens”, one of ETH Zurich’s anniversary events, was one of the nominees out of the 62 projects entered. “Welten des Wissens” took place from 22 April-8 May and attracted more than 220 000 visitors to its venues surrounding main railway station Zurich. Research and teaching at ETH was made tangible, graspable and exciting for the general public. You can find more information here. (in German)

His Holiness the Dalai lama at the ETH Zurich

On 4th August His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be present at the scientific symposium „Fear and Anxiety” at ETH Zurich. Six renowned scientists in the fields of religion, science and politics, including Dr. Eugen Drewermann, Prof. Jürgen Margraf and Dr. Gret Haller will discuss the diverse aspects of the topic of fear and anxiety. The symposium will be held in the Auditorium Maximum of the main building ETH Zurich and be broadcast in the adjoining lecture halls, giving access to a large audience. Forschung live is responsible for the infrastructure, personnel placement and the support and care of symposium participants. You can find more information here.

That was "Welten des Wissens" (22 April to 8 May 2005)

For two weeks in the heart of Zurich, residents had an opportunity to get a closer look at the research being conducted at ETH Zurich through "Welten des Wissens" held in the Platzspitz Park behind the Swiss National Museum. This extensive experiential exhibition gave the public a chance to discover more about science in an understandable and entertaining manner.

Reap the good harvest of your research

ETH Zurich has created a new research data base, the ETH Research DataBase.
However, the data base has not yet been used to the full. The research staff believes this calls for change. Yesterday 430 ETH professors received a fruit basket with the challenge to "Reap the good harvest too.....with the new ETH Research DataBase" (text: ETH life)
